(Markus Gygax, Gygax Productions/Schweiz)

Portrait of Rockhouse Salzburg

There is a big gab in Salzburg's "wide selection" of cultural offers that is mostly covered by the Salzburg festivals as there has not been an appropriate room for Pop, Rock or Jazz musicians in the past. Ath the early 80's some very engaged musicians had the target to found a "Rockhouse" in Salzburg. In 1985 the association "Pro-Ton" was born in order to meet this target. At the beginning of the 90's they found an appropriate building in the Schallmooser Hauptstrasse. As this building was also fitting into the policy of the town they made plans and a concept and began to reconstruct it.

On 14 October 1993 Rockhouse Salzburg opened the gates and little by little the scepsis with regard to this project faded because at the beginning people thought they will only hear Rock music.

Is was Wolfgang Descho and his team who made the Rockhouse Salzburg to one of the most respected and most popular clubs in Europe. "....it is a fact that Rockhouse Salzburg is the best Club in Austria and out of all the European venues that I know only the big clubs like "Grosse Freiheit Hamburg and the Mühle Hunziken in Bern" can compete with Rockhouse concerning the organisation, service and so on...." (Markus Gygax, Gygax Productions/Switzerland)

Till October 1998 (5-years event) 500.000 visitors had the chance to attend at more than 1000 events. International stars like Joe Zawinul, Katarina&Waves, Paradise Lost, Apollo Four Forty, Fear Factory, Manfred Mann, SAGA, Lutricia McNeal....have presented their music in Rockhouse Salzburg. But also the national music scene hat its opportunities. More than 140 bands (yes, there are so many in Salzburg/or have been during the last 5 years) have been given the chance to show what they can either as "local heros" or as a support for international bands.

Beside the big staging room there is a music cafe called "RIFF". Even there concerts can be held and are held. Furhtermore there are 6 rooms for rehearsals and meetings rooms. Workshops and other activities are held on a permanent basis.
