Frage selbst ist doch falsch gestellt. Jede Antwort auf eine solche Frage
kann nur noch einen Wörterkrieg hervorrufen, da die Begriffe zu unscharf
sind: 1. MUSS Kunst überhaupt was? 2. "Provozieren" alleine reicht nicht. Man kann entweder etwas (etwa ein Ereignis) provozieren oder man kann jemanden/etwas zu etwas provozieren. In jedem Fall wäre eine Erklärung wünschenswert. Wahrscheinlich geht es aber, grob genommen, um die Frage "Beuys oder nicht Beuys" o.ä. Eine Umfrage zu einem solchen Thema zu starten ist genauso anspruchsvoll wie "schafft es die VfB in die 2. Liga?". Und die Frage ist genauso einfach mit ja/nein zu beantworten wie "Ist der Mensch, der im Einklang mit der Natur lebt, glücklich?". Es gab mal eine (Um-?)Frage: "Sind Katzen bessere Menschen?" The question was asked the wrong way. Every answer to it can only cause a battle of words as the definitions are not clear enough:
In short words it is probably a question of "Beyus or not Beyus" or the like. To start a survey to this subject is as demanding as "will the VfB be able to go into the 2. Liga?". To answer this question with yes/no is as simple as to answer the question "Is a human who lives in line with nature happy?". Once upon a time there was a question: "Are cats better humans?" Natuerlich muss Kunst provozieren. Kunst ist genau so eine Ware wie Popcorn, Eis oder Kino. In der heutigen, hochgradig idiotischen Werbewelt wird auch nur mit provokanten Aktionen, siehe Benetton, Aufmerksamkeit erreicht. Kunst ist nur ein Mitbewerber bzw. Konkurrent im taeglichen Kampf um uns, den Verbraucher. Einer der genialsten Provokateure war Joseph Beuys. Bevor er eine Aktion startete, wurde die Presse informiert. Erst dann, wenn die Pressemeute anwesend war, gingen Aktionen los. Anfang der achtziger Jahre provozierten dann die sogenannten "Jungen Wilden" den internationalen Kunstmarkt. Kuenstler wie Fetting, Dahn, Dokoupil, Middendorf, Tannert oder Boemmels, um nur einige der wichtigsten zu nennen, belieferten den Kunstmarkt mit Werken, die aufgrund ihrer Thematik, oder nur aufgrund ihrer Farben, schockieren sollten. Nur als das Ziel erreicht war, Aufmerksamkeit, mauserten sich viele dieser Maler zu ernsthaften Kuenstlern. Qualitaet und Inhalt wurden im Lauf der Jahre immer wichtiger. Das gilt auch heute am Ende des Jahrtausends immer noch fuer diese Kuenstler, und das obwohl man sie damals als Nichtskoenner, Pinselschwinger oder Ignoranten beschimpft hatte. Heute lehren diese Kuenstler an den deutschen Kunstakademien. Wie sich die Meinung aendert. Provokation ist, war und wird immer nur Mittel zum Zweck sein. Of course art has to provoke. Art is a merchandise just like popcorn, ice cream or cinema. Our daily, highly idiotic advertising world can only focus its attention with provoking actions like Benetton. Art is only a competitor in the daily fight for us, the consumer. One of the genius provocateurs was Joseph Beuys. Before starting an action he used to inform the media. Only when the media-people were present he used to start his actions. At the beginning of the 80's the socalled "Young wilds" were provoking the international scene of art. Artists like Fetting, Dahn, Dokoupil, Middendorf, Tannert or Beoemmels,(tTo mention some of the most important ones) provided the market with art-works which were supposed to shock just because of their subjects or colors. Only after achieving the target ATTENTION most of those painters have become serious artists. By the time quality and content grew to the most important things. This is still the same at the end of this century. Though those artists in former days have been told to be ignorant, useless or paintbrush-swinger they are today teachers in German art-academies. That's how opinion changes. Provocation is, has been and will always be just a means to an end. Natürlich muss Kunst provozieren. Das heisst aber noch lange nicht, dass Kunst ausschliesslich ekelerregende Bilder und sonstige unangenehme Reize bringen muss. Das Publikum will ja erobert und nicht verscheucht werden. Künstlerei soll meiner Meinung nach wie ein Flirt sein. Der geneigte Zuhörer, Zuschauer und Leser muss vom Künstler bezirzt, dazu gebracht werden, in sein Universum, ins Universum des Künstlers einzutauchen... Wenn wir jemanden in unser Haus einladen, werden wir dem Besuch auch keine stinkende Ratte vor die Nase halten wollen. Der Künstler muss sein Publikum für sich, oder besser, für seine "Sache" gewinnen. Wie tue ich das? Mit Schmäh, wenn möglich mit Humor! Allein die himmelschreienden Missstände der Dritten Welt anzuprangern, zu zeigen, wie korrupt und ungerecht die Mächtigen, die Politiker sind, bringt uns keinen Schritt weiter. Wenn ich dem Leser nicht wenigstens ein kleinwinziges Lächeln entlocken kann, sind meine Bemühungen umsonst gewesen. Meine "Sache" ist es, alle Vorurteile die der Dritten Welt und anderen Bananenrepubliken anhaften, lächerlich zu machen... Ob das Kunst ist? Und ob das eine Kunst ist!!! Welcher Bewohner der sogenannten "Ersten
Welt", also Amerikaner und Europäer, will von der Dritten Welt mehr
als angenehme Urlaubstage an einem wunderbaren Palmenstrand? Die Dritte
Welt beginnt aber nicht erst an einem tropischen Palmenstrand, sondern bei
der Gleichgültigkeit der Menschen, die unmenschliche Situationen dulden
und nicht dagegen einschreiten. Egal wo! |

course art MUST provoke! But this does not mean that art shows only ugly
pictures or other uncomfortable stimuli. The audience wants to be
conquered but not chased away. ART should be just like a flirt. The artist
has to flirt with the listener, the watcher and the reader so that they
wish to enter to the artist's universe.
When inviting somebody in our house you will surly not present a stinking rat to the visitor. It is the artist who has to fill the audience with enthusiasm. How do you do this? With jokes, with humor! It does not bring us any further just to justify all the deplorable state of affairs in the third world or to show up how unfair and corrupt all the mighty people and the politicians are. I at least have to be able to bring a smile on to the face of the reader otherwise all my efforts have been in vain. It is my job to make all the prejudices with regard to the third world and other "banana republics" laughable...... don't know whether this is art? Oh yes, this is art!!! What more do all the people from
the so called first world, that means Europeans and Americans, want from
the third world than to spend some terrific holidays on the beach under
palm trees? The third world does not begin under a tropical beach with
palm trees but begins with the apathy of people to stand the inhuman
situations and not to do anything against it. It does not matter where! |
